Summer Urban Camp: Circus school, first week

On August we carried out our second urban camp, a circus school. Our circus school was "Rambazamba", a space to learn some acrobatics, juggling, clown, theater... and above all, a space to play!
This time we used the facilities of the Direction: a classroom and a football field. We were 12 childrem from the 3 Vilas and the volunteers (Yoana, Daniel and me) looking forward for some circus fun, and we found it!

*Day 1: Acrobatic-zamba

As usual we started the morning of the first day playing outside games. We began with some circle games like "true or lie". Each kid says 3 things about him/herself(likes,hobbies, dreams…). Two of the things have to be true, and one has to be a lie. The rest of the kids have to guess which one is a lie.

To warm up we also played some energetic circle games, like pass the energy through the circle or continue a movement:

"Bring me my shoe!" is a funny game in which one all the kids put their shoes on a pile in the middle of the playground. The kids will be in 2 teams placed in 2 lines. Each line of kids will be in one extreme of the playground, and the shoe pile in the middle, between both teams. The trainer will give a command, “bring me all the left shoes” and the kids have to run to the pile, find the appropriate shoes and come back to the line.

We wanted to decorate the classroom, Rambazamba's style, so we started with some clown faces to hang them on the wall. We made them with color paper for the face, a red balloon as the nose and cotton for the hair:

And finally, the most awaited activity of the day arrived: the acrobatics. At first we pract
iced some easy acrobatics in pairs to work confidence and balance.

And we finished acrobatics with some pyramids:

To develop the confidence between the kids (essential for circus activities) we played the game "zipper". All the kids except one are lying down on the floor with arms outstreched as a zipper. The ot
her kid will pass through the arms from one extreme to the other.

 *Day 2: Theater-zamba

The day began, as usual, with outside games. We started the morning with a traditional game: "Simon says" in which one all the kids are in a circle. Someone starts by saying "Simon says" and an action like "jump", "run", "sing", "dance", "be a monkey", "hug me"... And everyone has to follow the action.

"Rikki tikki" is a couple game played in 2 faced lines. The leader will say "Rikki tikki" and 2 body parts, for example "Rikki tikki - hand and head". The kids have to run to the middle to meet their couple and put those 2 body parts together, before to run again to their place.

"Spiderman - Batman - Alien" is a circle game of action - reaction. One kid sends an action (send a web like Spiderman, throw a boomerang like Batman, or a baby alien from the stomach) and the receiver react accordind to it.

To start the theater activities we made a craft of our own characters: the kids drew their shape on long papers. First they chose a special posture (dancer, warrior, clown...) and a partner drew the outline. Then they colored it with all the necessary details to create their characters.

Here are the results:

Finally we developed some theater activities, specially body expression games and emotion improvisations.
