1th of march: Mărțișor

Martisor comes from the word "Martie" which means the month of March in romanian. On first of march romanian people celebrate that spring has arrived. This event is a very old tradition which was symbolized by an amulet of a strip of wool that tied two stones, one red and one white. The colors represented the duality of the cosmos (existing in all cultures): red feminine and spring, and white male and winter. It was offered to children, girls and women. Today, people give martisores (amulets) and flowers to girls and women.
The week before of Martisor the market square is full of stands to buy presents for this special day.
The most typical figures are: four-leaf clovers and horseshoes. You can find amulets for 1 lei! And always using traditional colors: red and white.

You can buy it or do it by yourself (the educators in our Vilas with some kids did hundred of them by quilling).

So on 1th of march you can see more stands of flowers than usual and everyone carries flowers and martisors to give them out to everyone to wish luck and happiness.

Al :)
