On 7th of march we started our first big and international trip together: crossing Romania in direction to Budapest.
But this trip had something more special, we wanted to travel in a lowcost way so we hitchhiked, we slept in cheap hostels and we prepared our own food that we bought in supermarkets. Our aim was Budapest, and the original idea was: Slobozia-Sibiu-Budapest-Timisoara-Predeal. But when we were in Budapest and we realized that Bratislava was just 200 km away we decided: Slobozia-Sibiu-Budapest-Brastislava-Arad-Predeal.
I love to travel with my backpack, and I want to share with you what was inside:
(Basic backpack to travel 10 - 15 days in a spring-cold weather)
- 2 trousers
- 4 shirts (combined long and short sleeves)
- 1 pullover
- 1 sweatshirt
- 3 pairs of socks and underwear
- Towel
- Flipflops
- Toothpaste + toothbrush + shampoo + soap + deodorant + toilet paper
- Big map of Romania + guide of Romania
- Camera + phone + chargers
- Notebook and pen
- Flashlight
And how about the food?
- 2L Bottle of water
- 1L Bottle of juice
- Bread (Yoana and me chose white bread and Daniel and Miriam black bread)
- Stuff to eat with the bread (cheese to spread, normal cheese, salami, nutella...)
- Peanuts and nuts (they are cheap, easy to transport and they give to you a lot of energy)
- Cereal bars (they are so cheap, small, tasty and they give to you a lot of energy, there are also a lot of different combinations with chocolate and fruits)
- Fruit: we chose apples
- To transport the food we had tuppers and we also had knifes.
In the morning of 7th of march we were full of energy and illusions to start our trip. We went to one of the ends of Slobozia in direction to Bucharest. Although this is a good and usual point to hitchhike we were a little bit skeptical because we were 4 persons with 4 big backpacks and Spoon. But we just waited a few minutes and a small bus stopped. The driver told us that he will go to Bucharest one hour later and we can wait in his bus till then.
On 7th of march was the football match beetween Chelsea and Steaua Bucuresti so a group of Steaua followers went to Bucharest to watch the Champions match in this minibus. They were so friendly with us, even they gave us food and drinks. When we arrived to Bucharest I screamed: forța Steaua! And when we listened to the match in a truck going to Sibiu we could listened to the victory of Steaua.
We arrived in the night to Sibiu, to our home during 3 days: Old town Hostel.
Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania and, in tandem with the city of Luxembourg, it was designated a European Capital of Culture for the year 2007.
Sibiu (Hermannstadt in German) was the largest and
wealthiest of the seven walled citadels built in the 12th century by
German settlers known as Transylvanian Saxons.
Sibiu’s Old Town retains the grandeur of its earlier days when rich
and powerful guilds dominated regional trade. Like Sighisoara and
Brasov, it has a distinctly Germanic feeling. Sections of the medieval
wall still guard the historic area, where narrow streets pass
steep-roofed 17th century buildings with gable overhangs before
opening into vast, church-dominated squares such as Great Square and
Little Square.
Sibiu has a lot of things to discover so we walked in the city open minded to whatever cultural experience that we could have. And for sure we had. :)
Daniel met a german girl and a french guy who are living now in Sibiu. They told us a lot of cultural activities in the city and after a little visit to the touristic info we could prepare our weekend. We went to a photo-exposition about the romanian history of photography. It was in Romanian, but with french accent! We went to the Art Museum and other small museums too, even we saw the exposition of instruments that our french friend did in Sibiu (he makes medieval music instruments). But our favourite cultural experience in Sibiu was Faust.
I don't have words enough to explain about it, so here is a video
which can let you see a small part of what is this amazing theater play:
We met some friends and we promised them that we will come back in the summer! And we will, because Sibiu is amazing!
Al :)
