1st of May: Vama Veche

Vama Veche is a village in Constanţa County on the Black Sea coast, near the border with Bulgaria. Even in comunist era Vama Veche had the reputation of a non-mainstream tourist destination and a hangout for intellectuals. During this period the  border patrol spared Vama Veche the development that occurred in other Romanian Black Sea resorts. Vama Veche is still now a countercultural oasis.

May 1 is usually considered the first day of the summer seaside holiday season. Like every year on this date, hundreds of alternative people filled the beach to spend some days and nights in a place that never sleeps

E
VS volunteers from Romania also met on Vama Veche to start Easter holidays.

The accommodations are tents on the beach. Restaurants, fast food, mini markets and bars are open 24/7 on this season. There are also shops so you can buy sunglasses, a bikini, books or a Metallica t-shirt whenever you want! There are a lot of young street-sellers offering handmade stuff: t-shirs, bracelets, brooches... And my favorite shop: a fresh juice shop! You can drink a cheap fresh juice mixing the fruits that you want (I love to drink carrot juice on summer).

We spent 4 days in Vama Veche, we enjoyed the sun, the COLD water, and specially Vama Veche's enviroment: the beach was full of alternative and bohemian people. We could met volunteers and we also met new ones.
